This is an unique arrangement that can't be found anywhere else.
Mr. Corner's introduction:
"The Bach Cello Suites, BWV 1009, were originally written in the time around 1717–1723, when Bach
served as a Kapellmeister in Cöthen. They are some of the most famous pieces ever written for Cello,
with the preludes to the First and the Third suites being a staple piece of repertoire for all Cellists.
Transcribed for the Viola, they are in some ways more suited to the instrument than they are to the
Cello. The growling Bass, such a hallmark of the Cello sound, is replaced by a more tempered and
rounded acoustic, with the harmony being more well-matched for the sonorous middle harmony of
the Viola. Indeed, Movement V: ‘Gigue’ of the third suite has been admitted even by some cellists to
‘fit’ on the Viola more!
I have been studying some of the intricacies of Bach in the little free time that I have, and have
consulted various Violists for the best possible bowings and fingerings for playing these pieces. My
editing in the arrangement is restricted purely to bowing and fingering. I have tried to find the best
possible bowing violisticly. My playing directions are personal, and of course are free to be ignored
and altered as it is wished by the individual performer."
