“Down By The Old Mill Stream” is a song by the American vaudeville performer, composer and lyricist William “Tell” Taylor. The song was published in 1910 and became one of the early 20th century’s most popular songs with over 4 mln copies sold. Tell Taylor wrote the composition two years earlier in 1908 at the bank of the river Blanchard (Ohio) but no one thought it was of any commercial value back then. However, after the premiere performance of the song by the vaudeville quartet called The Orpheus Comedy Four it became such a success that shortly after that turned into barbershop quartet staple. In 1965, the son was covered by Alvin and the Chipmunks.
