Old and still popular Hebridean folk song. The music is provided here in various versions: a set in which the vocal part is reduced in size to make fewer pages turns for the pianist and a set where the vocal part is suitable for the singer (as shown in the sample). Each set is provided in the keys of C minor, D minor (the original key) and E minor.
The piano accompaniment is by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, which I have transcribed and transposed.
The original Gaelic words are anonymous (traditional)
(for the pronunciation of the Gaelic you can compare the following version from the BBC, but note that the words are different in places:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/alba/foghlam/beag_air_bheag/songs/song_02/page_05.shtml )
The wording in Lowlands Scots is by James Hogg (from his Ettrick Shepherd).
The sound sample is an electronic preview of the C minor version.
The original publication (in D Minor) by Boosey & Co, on which these transcriptions are based, is copyrighted by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser in 1909, so it is now in the public domain.
