When Rachel Oliver asked me to write music for her to sing at her Smith College reunion, I chose two of her poems whose words sang to me. I used the rhythm, form, and mood of the poetry to guide my composition. "Evening Dress" evokes the hushed and delicate beauty of fog settling over the foothills near Yosemite.

Mouse-foot fog slips
Into crevices
Quiet beyond notice
Dressing the chaparral
Soft as kitten's breath
Gliding silky vapor
No ponderous cloak
It drags in night
Drawing bird songs
In its wake

This is a lovely composition. This music enhances the mood of the words rather well. The intricate, yet delicate interplay between the piano and voice leads the listener into the misty evening.
