“Do You Hear What I Hear” is a song by American songwriter and composer Gloria Shayne. The lyrics to it were written in 1962 by the WW2 veteran and composer Noël Regney, Gloria’s husband at the time. Although the couple were invited to create a festive Christmas composition, their song rather became a musical cry for peace at the time when Cuban Missile Crisis was unfolding. Regney was actually against the expanding commercialization of the sacred holiday, but the song became a true Christmas standard to date. Originally “Do You Hear What I Hear” was recorded by Harry Simeone Chorale but it became a real hit after American singer Bing Crosby recorded his own version and released it in 1963 as a single. Since then, the song has been endlessly interpreted and re-recorded, with the notable versions by Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan and Celine Dion.
