“Cavatina” is a popular piece for classical guitar written by the British composer Stanley Myers in 1970. It was created for the crime drama film “The Walking Stick” released the same year. The peak of popularity came eight years later, when the song was used as theme music for the 1978 American war drama film directed by Michael Cimino – “The Deer Hunter”. The term ‘cavatina’ comes from Italian and refers to an air, melodious and simple. Originally, this piece was recorded by the famous Australian virtuoso guitarist John Williams and it happened before the film was released. Myers re-wrote the composition expanding it a bit. Both versions (the film’s and Williams’) got into UK’s Top 20 hits. In 1973, English jazz artist Cleo Laine created lyrics for this piece, originally solely instrumental. Her version was titled “He Was Beautiful” and also made it to the Top 20. “Cavatina” was recorded multiple times until 2016, some of the music artists who performed it were Angel Romero, Paul Potts, Vince Hill, Joe McElderry, Kaori Muraji and others.

Although this is generally considered to be a classical guitar piece, I found the solo piano version very consistent and organic in sound. This arrangement properly worked for me even though I had to transpose it a bit which made the middle section a bit trickier than I had expected. Very good pricing for such a good arrangement of the brilliant movie theme. Thank you.
