“Whiskey in the Jar” is one of the most popular/most performed traditional Irish folk songs. Just like it is with most of the folk music, its origins are unknown. The song became popular due to the Irish band known as The Dubliners who released the single in 1968 and turned it into their signature song. The version presented above was created by another popular band of Irish rockers known as Thin Lizzy. It appeared in 1972 and conquered the music charts of Ireland and Great Britain. The genre of this version can be characterized as Celtic/hard/blues rock. Generally, the song is about a highwayman whose wife betrayed him (although the contexts vary). An even more popular version of “Whiskey in the Jar” was recorded by the famous American band Metallica in 1998: it became Best Hard Rock Performance (Grammy).

For last two years I've found myself really attracted to the Irish folk music. There is something so kind and simple about this nation's songs that I can't resist the temptation of studying and playing more of them. Though Whiskey in the Jar is perhaps the most popular folktune, it's not the first thing I've learnt by now on guitar. I also enjoyed playing The Wild Rover and Seven Drunken Nights and planning to get on FInnegan's Wake next! So far, Whiskey has left the best impression, for the amount of improvisation it leaves to a performer. And the quality of the score version here would leave anyone satisfied of course.
