“Smilin' Through” is pop ballad published in 1919. Both music and lyrics were written by Arthur A. Penn. Since 1919 the song was recorded numerous times remaining a pop standard for years. Singers like Judy Garland, John McCormack, Reinald Werrenrath and Eleanor Steber recorded it. Jane Cowl’s play of the same name “Smilin' Through” that also saw world in 1919 is closely connected with the song though they were created independently. The song also appears in the 1922 “Smilin' Through” silent film, as well as in its later versions in 1932 and 1941. The song also inspired the famous American jazz sax composer Wayne Shorter for creating his own interpretation of the ballad for his 2005 album “Beyond the Sound Barrier”.

The 1922 film is actually really good. I don't there could be other melody used for it rather than Smilin Through

meine Stimme ist nicht mit der wunderschönen Stimme von Vera Lynn zu vergleichen, aber ich singe dieses Lied sooo gerne... Ein fantastisches Stück...

I so wish my vinyl player was still 'alive', that's how I envision the perfect evening with Vera Lynn, 'singing' the Smilin' Through to me…
