Practicing scales does not have a good reputation. To get anywhere in music, scales are a necessary part of mastering a musical instrument at all levels of playing from beginning to world class. But they are not a lot of fun....if you do them wrong, that is.

There are many hundreds of scales, both Western and non-Western in origin. The advantage to studying the 38 scale types used in this book is the opportunity to work out finger/note patterns you may not experience otherwise. If you are a player of music of the 20th and 21st Centuries you will find many composers who make use of unusual note sequences. By studying the scales in this book, you will go a long way to preparing yourself for the unexpected in music.

Part I takes each of the 38 scales and subjects them to a rigorous workout by simply leaving out certain notes in each group of four.

The second section puts each of the 38 scales into a scale in thirds pattern. This is where each scale shows it true sonic features and provides even more challenging contemporary note patterns to master.

Part III is a tongue-in-cheek exploration of how changing the scale or mode of a tune changes it drastically. Part IV consists of three advanced etudes composed to make use of some of the scale patterns found in the previous sections.
