This is a comic song from the British music hall era of the early 1900s, suitable for five unaccompanied voices SATBarB or small mixed choir.
It tells the tale of two young men who have travelled away from their Yorkshire home. Through a chance meeting, they discover they are both seeing the same grey-eyed girl. They decide to confront her about it, but discover she has been keeping another secret.
The melody is predominantly a duet for soprano and alto, with the tenor and baritone playing the parts of the two men.
The song was mentioned by James Joyce in his novel Ulysses.
