Conversation Concerto No.3 - for flute and orchestra (B97) This piece is the third of a series of concerti intended partly for good amateurs who would normally not be attracted to some overtly difficult modern works but who want the challenge of today’s music. This concerto was completed in June 1996, the impetus to write it being the 70th birthday of the Swedish composer Maurice Karkoff in March 1997, and the work includes particularly Swedish folk elements. The work is in three movements:- 1. Allegro: this movement and also the last movement, are dominated by rhythm, here with melodic interludes by the flute, and ending peacefully with a quiet invocation of the Lapplanders’ joik, as though heard at a great distance. 2. Allegro amabile e lirico: this atmospheric movement is an orchestration of Karkoff’s solo flute piece Hångars Källa (Spring in Hångar). It has no Swedish folk tunes, but conveys the feeling of peace on this island in the Baltic. It may be played, as in the original, on alto flute if desired. 3. Allegro: this movement is again rhythmic, using the dotted rhythms associated with much Swedish folk music. After a cadenza the music dies down again, as in the first movement, as though leaving Sweden after a visit.
