Jean-Baptiste Singelée (born September 25, 1812 in Bruxelles- died September
29, 1875 in Paris) was a violinist, conductor and Composer. He performed as a
violinist in the Orchestra of the Opéra-comique in Paris and then as first violin
of the Orchestra of the Royal theatre de la Monnaie in Bruxelles. He was
conductor of the theatre ofGant, and then at the Theatre de La Monnaie de
Bruxelles. He wrote ballets, two violin concertos andmany instrumental pieces,
including the first Saxophone Quartet andmany of the first examination pieces
for Sax (who probably studied at the Royal Conservatory in Bruxelles at the same
time as Singelée) at the saxophone class of the Paris Conservatory.
The present work is in the form of a middle romantic period quartet: a sontata allegro with a slow introduction, anAndante,
a scherzo with trio and a rondo-final).
Given several divisi passages in the soprano and baritone parts, it would appear that this work was intended to be
performed by a saxophone ensemble (Sax's saxophone class, perhaps?) rather than single players. These divisi
passages have been left intact in order to allow performances by ensembles. The smaller notes (in brackets) should
be left out when performed by a quartet.
