A collection of Baroque, Classical, and Romantic-style compositions in uncommon keys for late novice to early intermediate pianists of all ages.
VENTURING BEYOND features twenty late beginner to early intermediate-level piano solos, representing all key signatures with three or more sharps/flats (including enharmonics)--keys rarely seen in today's pedagogical piano literature for the early grades. These pieces, written in Baroque, Classical and Romantic styles, not only help acquaint students with the idea of reading "within keys," but they also introduce common musical genres of the Western Classical canon (including the scherzo, sarabande, minuet, and fugue). These short, expressive compositions--each no more than two pages in a medium-sized font and requiring no more than a major sixth reach--are also ideal for adult students who desire to play musically satisfying repertoire that is within their technical grasp, but still suitable for public and private performance. This volume also refrains from invoking programmatic titles or content that might suggest that it is geared toward the school-age student; thus, it is ideal for student pianists of all ages, from 5 to 105! This volume is pre-formatted to print double-sided, so that each of the two-page pieces will lie on facing pages when bound and no page turns will be required."

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
“Albumleaf” (or “Albumblatt” in German) is a title commonly given to short pieces in the Romantic era (mid-late 19th century). This piece’s particular character is a little more Baroque in flavor, however, and it should be played nostalgically—never rushing or driving forward, but with a rock-steady bass over which the melody may ebb and flow. Skills employed in this piece: *Use of the melodic minor scale (B# ascending, B-natural descending) *Breaking out of 5-finger position in both hands *RH syncopation within cut time *Cantabile playing and optional ornamentation

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
“Andante” is a widely used term that describes a relaxed, walking tempo. Many middle movements within larger three or four-movement works will have an Andante (or even slower) tempo marking. In this piece, the right-hand melody should be projected, keeping the accompanying left hand in the background. Skills employed in this piece: *Shift in left-hand position and occasional passages outside the pentascale *Clef switching *Legato and phrasing *Small variations within repeated passages (most commonly found in Mozart) *Preparatory study for Mozart and other Classic-era slow movements

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
The word “arioso” means “in the manner of an aria,” a selection for solo voice with orchestra (usually part of an opera) with an expressive melody that shows off the singer’s abilities. Thus, in this piece, the right hand should always project more than the left, and some additional rubato is appropriate. Skills employed in this piece: *Reading in heavily sharp keys with double-sharps *Cantabile playing in the RH *Traditional melodic ornamentation in the RH *Executing smooth LH arpeggiations that may exceed normal hand span

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
The word “benediction” means “blessing,” and as such, this piece should be played in a gentle, yet joyful manner. Careful attention to melodic shaping will bring out the maximum expressive effect. <i>Notes on the composition:</i>
Berceuse is a French term meaning “lullaby,” and the gently rocking left hand in this piece calls to mind a baby being soothed to sleep in his or her crib. Thus, the Berceuse should always be played sweetly and gently, in the way that one would sing to a baby, and the tempo should never be rushed. Skills employed in this piece: *Reading in sharp keys with B# and E# *Development of rotation in both hands *Cantabile playing *Achieving smoothness in 7th- and octave-leaps

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
In common usage, consolation refers to the act of comforting someone in a time of loss. The term became associated with music when the Hungarian Romantic composer Franz Liszt composed six nocturne-like pieces entitled Consolations. In keeping with the definition of the word, this piece should be played with a gentle, but steady touch—you may approach the portato figures (the staccatos under slurs) as if you were patting someone on the back while comforting them. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading in heavily flat key signatures * Portato articulation in both single-note passages and chords * Legato touch in both hands * Execution of parallel thirds (LH)

From VENTURING BEYOND, this is Daydream in E major, an attractive, quasi-Impressionist piece for the developing pianist.
Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
This piece pays homage to the great Impressionistic composers of late 19th and early 20th-century France, including Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. In order to create an appropriately dreamy atmosphere, the piece must be played with a consistently gentle touch, even in forte passages, and students may choose to use the una corda pedal as well, depending on their instruments. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading in moderately sharp keys with many accidentals * Counting with ties over the bar and metrical dissonance * Doubled thirds in the RH * Beginning 2-voice polyphony in the RH * Legato touch

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
After receiving some feedback on the original A# minor entry in Venturing Beyond (Hallucination in A# minor) suggesting that it was a good deal more demanding than the other pieces in the book, I decided to contribute a new piece in the same key, but more in line with the book's general musical and technical demands, hitting an early to mid-intermediate level. This Chorale is a reverent and reflective piece that would be ideal not only for sharp-key practice and learning how to control multi-voice motion in both hands, but also for religious services, ceremonies, and other such events for which the advanced pianist doesn't have much practice time.

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
The fantasy is an open-ended, improvisational genre within the Western Classical tradition. Often, seasoned performers would improvise a bit at the end of each concert, and a few continue that practice today. This fantasy develops a couple of small ideas (a rising motive and a turning figure) as an improvising performer might. In this piece, some rubato is appropriate, though the overall tempo should remain slow. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading in heavily flat key signatures with double-flats * Beginning polyphony in LH * Reading ties that extend across barlines * Smooth navigation of melodic leaps spanning 3rds-6ths * Warmth and richness of tone

From VENTURING BEYOND, this is Fughetta in C minor - one of the very few (perhaps the only) specifically fugue-form pieces in the early to mid-intermediate literature that prepares students for J. S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and other works.

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
A fughetta is a small fugue, or a contrapuntal work (most popular in the Baroque era) with 2 or more independent voices that each present, and then develop, a single short melodic idea. That idea (called the subject) should always be emphasized whenever it appears—and occasionally, you might even find two voices stating it at the same time. Skills employed in this piece: * Navigating 3-voice polyphonic textures * Splitting a single voice between 2 hands (maximum required stretch M6) * Becoming familiar with fugue technique and terminology * Reading in slightly flat keys

<i>Notes on the composition:</i>
A gondoliera (also known as a barcarolle) is the song of a gondolier, the person who rows the traditional gondola boats used for transportation in Venice, Italy. It is generally slow in tempo, with a 6/8 meter and a lilting rhythm evocative of the boat’s gentle rocking. The right hand should be projected more than the left, but the touch should remain soft in both hands. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading heavily flat key signatures and double-flats * Cantabile phrasing and legato touch * Smooth LH arpeggiation over an 8ve (blocked 8ves not required) * Negotiating syncopated LH rhythms within compound time

From VENTURING BEYOND, this is Hallucination in A# minor!
Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
Notes on the composition:
Since the key of A-sharp minor is rare indeed (composers often prefer to use B-flat minor, its enharmonic equivalent), I wanted to write a piece that conveys a sense of breaking from reality. In a hallucination, one thinks that he or she sees, hears, or senses something that isn’t really there (but unlike dreaming, hallucinations take place while one is awake). Therefore, this piece should always have a very hushed and mysterious character. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading heavily sharp key signatures * Reading double-sharps * Executing syncopated rhythms in both hands * Voicing chords (up to a major 6th/dim. 7th stretch) * Developing control of dynamics from mf-ppp * Reading cut (2/2) time

From VENTURING BEYOND, this is Lament in F# minor!
Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
Notes on the composition:
Particularly in the Baroque era (roughly 1650-1750), the “lament bass” was a very popular musical idea that composers would use to express sadness or lost love. In a lament bass, the bass notes descend a half-step at a time between the tonic (or home note) and the dominant (a fourth below it). In this piece, try to create a singing line in the left hand, particularly when it begins the lament bass pattern in mm. 5. Skills employed in this piece: * Chord voicing in the RH * Reading in moderately sharp keys with E# and B# * Beginning polyphony in both hands * Navigating basic metrical dissonance - groups of 2 against the 3/4 meter
Notes on the collection:

Notes on the composition:
“Liebeslied” is the German word for “love song.” This piece should be played tenderly and with some rubato (but not so much that the prevailing meter is obscured). Skills employed in this piece: * Reading in slightly sharp key signatures * Reading high ledger lines in bass clef * Cantabile playing in the RH * Navigating varied reprises of previously heard themes in ABA format * Dotted-quarter rhythms

From VENTURING BEYOND, this is Minuet in E-flat major!
Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
Notes on the composition:
The minuet was an enormously popular courtly dance in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It has a light and happy character and a moderate tempo, almost always in 3/4 time. It should be played with a light touch and defined, but not too heavy rhythmic pulse. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading in somewhat flat keys * Dotted-quarter rhythms against a quarter-note bass * Smooth arpeggiation in both hands * Slightly varied reprises of previously heard themes

From VENTURING BEYOND, this is Nocturne in D-flat - the only (early-) intermediate educational composition in D-flat major of which I (the composer) am aware.
Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
Notes on the composition:
The nocturne was first made famous by the Irish composer John Field in the early 19th century; however, most pianists today associate the genre with Frederic Chopin. It usually features a lyrical melody over an arpeggiated bass. In this piece, the right hand melody should be played cantabile (in a singing style) throughout, with the left hand in the background. Some rubato is appropriate. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading heavily flat key signatures and double flats * Enharmonic reinterpretation (B double-flat/A natural) * Cantabile playing in the RH * Arpeggiation and smooth execution of broken chord figures * Clef switching in the LH

Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
Notes on the composition:
The title of this piece, Reflection, suggests a calm and thoughtful mood. To achieve this, the left hand should remain completely steady, while the right hand may “breathe” a bit more. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading double-sharps, E# and B# * Reading ledger lines in bass clef * Right hand rubato and syncopation * Cantabile/singing style and legato phrasing * Breaking out of 5-finger position in both hands

Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
Notes on the composition:
The word “reverie” means “daydream,” and in this piece, the undulating right hand evokes a dreamy, calm landscape. To express this image most effectively, the right hand should remain legatissimo, with subtle melodic shaping and a hushed dynamic throughout. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading in heavily flat keys with some naturals and F/C-flat * Consistent legato phrasing * Shifts in hand position * Compound meters * Clef switching

From VENTURING BEYOND, this is Sarabande in F minor!
Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
Notes on the composition:
A sarabande is a stately triple-meter dance, usually at a slow tempo, that originated in Spain. It is distinguished from other triple-meter dance styles by its emphasis on the second beat within each measure. In this piece, the left hand should be completely steady (avoiding any rushing), with the melody projected and lyrically phrased over it. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading in moderately flat key signatures * Legato touch * Sarabande rhythm * 6th and 8ve leaps (blocked 6ths not required)

From VENTURING BEYOND, this is Scherzo in C# major! To my (the composer's) knowledge, this is the only early to mid-intermediate piano piece available in the key of C# major.
Link to purchase entire Venturing Beyond volume: https://ndipaolo.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/sm-226266_venturing_beyond.html
Notes on the composition:
A scherzo is a fast piece in two parts, usually in triple meter, often with a humorous character (the word “scherzo” itself means “joke” in Italian). It is usually included as the second or third movement in a 4-movement work, like a symphony or string quartet, in place of the slower minuet. This piece should always be played with light and crisp articulation in the scherzo, with a more cantabile (singing) touch in the contrasting trio. Skills employed in this piece: * Reading in heavily sharp keys * Reading double-sharps * Staccato touch * Scherzo/trio design (compound ternary containing binary forms)

Notes on the composition:
The undulating diminished chords in this piece evoke a mysterious, almost surreal atmosphere, much like what (I imagine) one would feel while experiencing a divine vision. While performing this work, the second time through each section should be played more softly than the first (while still articulating the dynamic contours). Skills employed in this piece: * Reading heavily flat key signatures and C-flat * Reading enharmonically respelled passages * Beginning polyphony * Compound duple time signatures * Controlling dynamics in the soft range * (Optional) use of the una corda pedal
