"Mary's Boy Child" is a Christmas song written by the American choral and Gospel music composer Jester Hairston. It was written in 1956 and is being widely performed as a carol until now. Originally, Hairston wrote an Afro-Caribbean rhythm song for a birthday party and later used it as the basis for a choral composition he was asked to create for Schumann’s Hollywood Choir. At one of the choir’s performances, the American-Jamaican pop star Harry Belafonte heard the composition and asked for the permission to record it. His version was released as part of the album “An Evening with Belafonte” and as a single in 1957. That same year, “Mary’s Boy Child” by Belafonte reached the first position of the Singles Chart in the UK and became the 1st one-million seller in the country. The composition was later covered by various artists like Boney M, Andy Williams, John Denver, The Bee Gees and many others. The recording released by the American Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson is known under the title “Mary’s Little Boy Child” and is also available in our catalogue.

This is a pretty lovely and unpretentious arrangement of this famous Christmas tune as sung by Harry Belafonte.
I had no trouble learning it and it was very well received by my audience, like a good soulful spiritual. However, I kind of miss the original calypso style by Hairston that is not present in Belafonte recording. Sometimes the originals have that special sort of charm that is partially lost in the covers... The sheets are great, though.
