In February of 2016, Michael Couper approached me about composing a piece for soprano, saxophone and piano. For the text, we turned to the poetry of the great German/Sri Lankan poet Anne Ranasinghe, whose works we both admired, and settled on her Four Stanzas on Mortality. These poems on life and death with precise and exquisite language.

I speak about the work around 50:32 and the performance follows, with soprano Yungee Rhie, saxophonist Michael Couper and pianist ChoEun Lee (for whom the work was composed).
