In the early 2000s, I went to a poetry reading at The Library of Congress to see my colleague poet Thomas Lux, whose poems I had set to music. I met Toi Derricotte that night, and she asked if I would like to set her poetry. I found her poems so well-crafted and interesting, and decided to use her poetry for an upcoming commission for soprano Susan Marie Pierson and trumpeter Sandra Coffin. Susan and Sandra premiered Captivity (which included 5 poems) on May 22, 2006 at Hunter College in New York City.
After hearing the cycle, I revised it and have continued revising over the years. I removed two of the songs (The Minks and Captivity) from the cycle, feeling those songs required the addition of piano. In 2021, I created an arrangement for soprano with oboe and in 2024, I revised all again — freeing up the singer’s lines and rewriting with more metric stability to create this edition. The accompaniment’s circular motion in The Polisher of Brass comments on the image of the repetitive nature of the polishers. The initial jaunty spirit of Books alternates with slower dreamier sections, illuminating the different adventures to be found in a good book. The Struggle details the Toi’s upbringing and questions about race.
