“Life on Mars?” also titled “Is There Life on Mars?” is a single by the legendary English singer and song-writer David Bowie. It was released in 1971 as part of his album “Hunky Dory” and as a single later in 1973. The piano part in the song belongs to the English keyboard player Rick Wakeman. The Daily Telegraph made a parallel between “Life on Mars?” and the paintings of Salvador Dali, mostly because of the strange and complex lyrics of the song. According to Bowie, the song was written in half a day and was a parody for Frank Sinatra’s recording of “My Way”, as well as a love song. It is suggested that the song was composed right after Bowie’s break-up with the actress Hermione Farthingale. “Life on Mars?” was very popular in Britain both at the time of its release as well as 30 years later when it was used in the TV series “Life on Mars”.

Life on Mars was among my strongest inspirations for switching to rock music.
