Robert Schumann

Romantic

The period of Romanticism can hardly be imagined without music of Robert Schumann, an innovator in the field of harmony and rhythm, who wasn’t fully appreciated during his lifetime. Schumann’s educational activities were immensely successful, he was among the first to appreciate at true value works of Chopin and Brahms and to call the latter the ideal spokesman for hopes of his epoch.

Following the example of his colleagues Schumann pursued careers of conductor, teacher and performer, but after injuring the right hand during zealous exercising he had to abandon his concert career and focus on composition. Anyway, his oeuvre contains numerous works for piano, including sonatas, suites and songs, making up a considerable part of his wife’s Clara Schumann’s repertoire.

Schumann’s poetical nature, since he set to music verses of almost all prominent German poets, may seem incompatible with his orchestral scale, but it would be a wrong conclusion – Schumann’s symphonies are marked with an exceptional expressiveness and arouse no less interest than his other works.

Our site presents a large number of compositions written by one of the most prominent representatives of Romanticism, namely 1655of them, all are easy to download and print. Besides, 1114 pieces are available for free for all lovers of classical music.
