“Nature Boy” is a popular now song written by the American songwriter, a hippie artist who lived a pastoral life – Eden Ahbez. The song was written in 1947 and became well-known due to the recording made by the famous jazz musician Nat King Cole (1948). Released as a single that year, the song soon went on to become a popular jazz/pop standard. It was covered by numerous artists, including Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Celine Dion as well as used in own compositions by David Bowie, Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett duo. Lyrically, the song is considered to be Ahbez’ autobiography (partially), it’s most recognizable line being ‘the greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return’. Musically, the song was especially praised for the enchanting strings and flute used at the beginning, as well as the parallel with the Piano Quintet No. 2 by Antonín Dvořák (2nd movement). The key of the original composition is D Minor.

The piano score of this amazingly beautiful composition makes a perfect basis for creating some outstanding covers. Its melody and structure are so inviting for pianists, luring for improvisers and experimentalists. I learnt to play the original piano part pretty fast and am working on my own rendition of the piece. A great music work could be made of this in accompaniment of a violin or a cello, for instance. But that's next on the to-do list.
