“Ja, Vi Elsker” is the title of Norwegian National Anthem. Its music was composed by Norwegian composer Rikard Nordraak and the lyrics – by the Nobel Prize laureate Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. The funny thing about Norway and its anthem is the fact that it doesn’t have any. Not officially, at least. For years Norway is known for having a number of different anthems that existed ‘de facto’ and could either replace one another or represent the country simultaneously. Thus, the current “Ja, Vi Elsker” was composed in the period between 1859 – 1868 and came to replace the previously popular “Sønner av Norge”. Likewise, today’s anthem is not the only one performed at official events. Norway has currently two more songs that also act as music business cards – “Mitt lille land” composed by by Ole Paus and the royal analogue of the English “God Save the Queen” composed by Gustav Jensen – “Kongesangen”.

"Ja, vi elsker dette landet" (English: Yes, we love this region) is the national anthem of Norway.
The words of the anthem
wrote Bjornstern Bjornson between 1859 and 1868. In 1864 Rikard Nordraak (1842-1866) wrote music for the anthem.
It was first played publicly on May 17, 1864 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of adoption
Constitution. The first and last two verses are usually sung.
History of the text
The modern version of the anthem differs from the original, because Bjornstern Bjornson wrote
the text in Norwegian, which was common in his time and had much in common with Danish. Since
Bokmal (written Norwegian) has gone through several stages of reform, so the modern version
has some differences.

As for me, the 2011 'Mitt lille land' is a lot closer to me. It's more up-to-date and gracious than all of the previous alternatives.
