“Anchors Aweigh” is the 1st song of the US Naval Academy as well as the 1st march of the US Navy. The music to it was composed by Charles Zimmermann who was a lieutenant and a band master at that time. The lyrics of the march were written by Alfred Hart Miles. Originally, Zimmermann intended to compose a football march. It was premiered at the 1906 football game between Navy – Army in Philadelphia. As Navy won, the song was adopted as their unofficial song with time. The specific character of the lyrics leaves the ‘official’ status of “Anchors Aweigh” pending. Being a very joyful, cheerful and catchy piece, the song was also adopted by other Navies of the world (e.g. Finland). It also got a relatively wide use in popular culture (Disney’s nautical themes, Batman bombing scenes, etc.)
