This Christmas Carol comes from the collection of Sacred Songs, 1582 and is often translated "On this day earth shall ring". The First text is from around 1360 "Intonent hodie" ( Let's sing today). The full translation of the present text in English can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personent_hodie#Translations . The text talks of the birth of Jesus and the visit of the Three Wise Men. The present arrangement is for 3 mixed voices: Soprano - Alto - Bass/Baritone and is set with contemporary harmonies that recall a medieval style. The original melody is found in the Moosburg manuscripts of 1360. The music can be performed with only instruments, or singing a cappella or singing with instruments doubling the vocal parts. We suggest Wind or String instruments ad libitum. I am also uploading a setting for 3 female voices with an audio clip sung by the Tempus Floridum Ensemble of Florence, Italy.

Personent Hodie (On this day earth shall ring) is a Christmas carol originally published in the 1582 Finnish song book Piae Cantiones, a volume of 74 Medieval songs with Latin texts. The song book had its origins in the libraries of cathedral song schools, whose repertory had strong links with medieval Prague. A melody found in a 1360 in a Moosburg, Germany manuscript is almost the same, and it is from this manuscript that the song is usually dated. The present arrangement is for 3 female voices or instruments. The text is in Latin but the full text in English is provided on the 2nd page of the score. It is a lively Carol and adapt for both concerts and liturgy. It can be performed by either or both a vocal ensemble or instruments, or solists.

Medieval Christmas tune for flute choir. Rhythmically and melodically straightforward, but with very few markings to allow the ensemble to make their own musical decisions. Piccolo joins in the middle and must ad lib. ornamentation. Best suited for choir with wide range of playing levels. This piece will add unique variety to any Christmas program.
