"String Quartet" (or as initially it was called: "Variations in F Major") was composed starting from April 1987, mostly finished during summer of that year, and finally completed on October 9, 1987.

The Quartet is in three distinct but connected movements: Introduction, theme and the first 25 variations making the 1st movement; sole var. 26 - starting at 09:54 , which melodically is based on var. 17 and 19 but at much slower tempo, is its 2nd movement; and the third movement - starting at 13:18 - containing variations from 27 to 32 (coda).

All variations contained within the first movement are based on short, 8 measures long structures each, devised from four quite independent but matching melodies, which will be used later on sometimes together, sometimes separately, in various arrangements and melodic and/or harmonic alterations. The main theme is introduced starting from the lowest voice in cello solo, to which soon viola joins in, next 2nd violin, and finally the first violin bringing it for the first time. That 8-measure structure is preserved during the whole first movement (each variation being exactly 8 measures long).

As it is said, that Quartet was first named as "Variations in F Major" and in the beginning when it was in sketch form I did not yet decide what to do with it. It was formally converted to be a string quartet, however, in May-June 2011, and in this form it is presented here.

Includes full score and all parts.
