Varied and boisterous, "January Morning" refers to the heavy storms of 1997 which kept the poet housebound because of a washed out bridge. With jazzy harmonies and rhythm, it describes a morning at home with two cats, a warm fire, and a cup of coffee.
January Morning by Rachel Oliver Cold and dark, Two-cat night, Sleep is done. Wisps of dreams Twirl in the head... Body gathers twigs for an early fire. Hands grind beans for a java treat. Ankles are rubbed by Alpha Cat who swats Beta Cat Just because... Raindrops plink on windowpanes. Outside in mist Creeks roar by. They all shout, in cacophony, "I'm a RIVER!" "I'm bigger...," "I'm wetter!" "I'm faster!" "I'm louder!" Stuck home again. Ah well... Back to bed Cold toes Cold nose... Snuggle in down. Cats purr... Coffee's good. Drought's gone. Can't complain...
