This piece was written in February 2010 for the Wessel Ensemble, made up of members of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra - Jenny Hutchinson (flute), Martin Clark (violin), Fiona Petersen (viola) and Melissa Edwards (cello) who gave the first performance of my Quartetto Accademico [B158]. At that concert, they also played an arrangement of the Poulenc Flute Sonata, and this gave me the idea to arrange my own Tre Dialoghi Veneziani, [B156] written originally for clarinet and guitar . There are three movements:-

1. Dialogo tra l'alba e la laguna
An Impressionistic sunrise piece with the dawn breaking over the lagoon. Both flute and strings are happy to sing the same song.

2. Dialogo tra un gondoliere e il sole
A lighter mood now with the gondolier's song and the sound of the oars producing a sense of well-being, even idleness, in the sunshine.

3. Dialogo tra il crepuscolo e la morte
A return to a darker sound world; in the end, both Dusk and Death sing the same song as the dusk knows that there will always be another day, and Death knows that there will always be death and so there is mutual harmony.

The first performance was given by the Wessel Ensemble on April 18th 2011 at the Church of St. Philip with St. Stephen, Salford.
