This is the third of four works, each of six movements, for advanced string players (the others being Sequences for solo violin (B46), Signatures for solo viola (B50) and Surrealisms for solo double bass (B60). It was written in January 1992 for David Chew, the Principal 'Cellist of the Brazilian National Symphony Orchestra and uses snatches of Latin American rhythms from time to time within the loosely serial framework in each of the pieces.
