My Father taught me this song when I was quite young, teaching me the French lyrics phonetically. Later on I learned that it was about a man traveling in exile. Happening upon a stream that he hoped would flow to his homeland, he asks the river to carry his fond greetings and remembrances of friends and family at home. Thanks, Dad.
