Marche is a fanfare for percussion septet, suitable for an advanced high school or beginning college percussion program. The moderate tempo, 5/4 time signature, extreme dynamics and ensemble interplay make for a dramatic concert opener.
The ensemble is formed in three units: a timpani soloist playing the fanfare, a responding glockenspiel and chimes playing a tone-row interlude, and a battery of snare drum, bass drum, cymbals and triangle.
The heart of the piece is the middle section, played as one continuous, steady crescendo leading to the final note. This final note is marked ffff---the loudest dynamic possible without harm to the ensemble instruments or members. .
