The idea for Hot Buttered Omelette came as I was coming Elements, a song cycle for soprano, flute, clarinet and piano with text from poet Nikki Giovanni and was working on the movement 3, titled I Wrote a Good Omelet, based on a poem by that same name.
This composition is based on the poem I Wrote a Good Omelet by Nikki Giovanni. More specifically, I was composing a song cycle of 4 Nikki Giovanni poems and after I read I Wrote a Good Omelet to myself several times, I thought that rhythm and blues type music would be good for it. After I composed that particular movement, I thought that the music would also work well for a trombone choir. Hot Buttered Omelette is a single movement work based on jazz and rhythm and blues music, featuring ostinato jazz/funk bass lines in the bass trombone and similar type of music for the melodies.
