1. Allegro moderato 2. Adagio 3. Scherzo and Trio 4. Finale: Andante - allegro This sonata was completed in January 1992 soon after the birth of the composer’s third child. Although it follows the Classical style of movements and form, it uses a language which combines tonality, both diatonic and chromatic, modality, and passages of atonality and serial technique. The whole work revolves around the opening five notes, which form the basis of all the major melodies in the work, and dictate the direction of the serial passages. It was later re-scored as the composer’s second string quartet [B33]. The recording in the sound sample here is the third movement.
