This work was begun in late 2005 and was completed in April 2006.
The Impromptu [No.1] was begun with the idea of composing a set of three. This developed under the prospect of a piano recital in Mansfield featuring John Ogdon's and other Mansfield composers' music, played by Jonathan Scott, to whom the piece is dedicated. The second piece - Show Song, began as a satirical political song, while the third, Centenary Waltz, dedicated to the composer's mother, born in 1906, was composed last as the composition of three Housman poems [B143] intervened. Number 4 is an affectionately satirical set of variations on Old Samuel Brunts - the composer's old school song.
