This piece was written for Hallé Brass in June 1999 and first performed by them on December 13th 2005 at Peel Hall, Salford University. Like the first quintet it is in one continuous movement. The first five of the six short sections each give prominence to a different instrument to give a concertante effect. The first section has fast runs for the tuba, the second is more a duet between the trumpets and the other three instruments, ending in a modal tune which will eventually end the whole piece. The third section gives the horn a taste of a mock-Mozart concerto, while the fourth gives the trombone a somewhat uncertain jazz-like atmosphere. Section five has the trumpet making fast figures, followed by a broad tune using the composer's favourite device of "remainder notes" of a twelve-note row. This leads to a sixth section beginning serially and contrapuntally, but soon resolving into the modal tune heard in the second section.
