This is a contemporary Choral or Duet setting for 2 voices (SA) and piano or keyboard/organ of the famous Christmas Gregorian Chant "A Child is born to us" - "Puer Nobis Nascitur". The setting is in Latin. The piece can be used liturgically or as part of a concert program. I originally wrote this piece in 1994 with the Latin text included in the Moosberger Gradual, 1360. Recently I have found the complete text with five verses and revised the setting to fit more words, therefore I am considering this written this year, 2013. The full text is included in the Sample pdf to view on line, however I will include it here:

PUER NOBIS NASCITUR

Text of Gregorian Chant for Christmas

1. Puer nobis nascitur
Rector angelorum;
In hoc mundo pascitur
Dominus dominorum.

2. In præsepe ponitur
Sub fœno asinorum.
Cognoverunt dominum
Christum regem cœlorum.

3. Hinc Herodes timuit -
Magno cum dolore,
Et pueros occidit,
Infantes cum livòre.

4. Qui natus est ex Marie -
Die hodierna
Ducat nos cum gratia
Ad gaudia superna.

5. O et A et A et O
Cum cantibus in choro,
Cum canticis et organo,
Benedicamus domino.

English Translation by J.Yakkey

1. A child is born to us
Ruler of the angels;
In this world nourishes
The Lord of lords.

2. He lies in a manger,
Under the donkey’s hay.
Everyone recognizes his Lord,
Christ, the king of heaven.

3. Haughty Herod feared,
With great pain,
And full of spite
had infant boys killed.

4. The child born of Mary,
From today
Leads us with grace
To heavenly joy.

5. Alpha and Omega we sing
With our chorales,
With our chants and organ;
Bless the Lord.

"A Child is born to us" is a two minute 4 part a cappella Latin Motet in contemporary harmonization reminiscent of the Renaissance idiom. The pdf includes two versions: four part female chorus (SSAA) and four part mixed chorus (SATB). The text is an anonymous 15th c. poem, published in the collection "Piae Cantiones" 1582. There are several versions of this text. The piece can be doubled by instruments, and can be performed either by choir or four soloists.

Puer nobis nascitur ( version from the Trier Library, published in 1864 by Philipp Wackernagel )

1.Puer nobis nascitur,
Rector angelorum,
In hoc mundo pascitur
Dominus dominorum.

2. In praesepe ponitur
Sub foeno_asinorum;
Cognoverunt dominum
Christum, regem coelorum.

3. Hinc Herodes timuit
Magno cum dolore,
Et pueros occidit
Infantes cum livore.

4. Qui natus est ex Maria
Die hodierna
Ducat nos cum gratia
Ad gaudia superna.

5. O et A et A et O,
Cum cantibus in choro,
Cum canticis et organo,
Benedicamus Domino.

1. A child is born to us,
Rector of the angels,
In this world lives the
Lord of lords

2. He is placed in the manger
In the donkeys hay;
They recognized the master
Christ, the King of Heaven

3. Hence Herod was afraid
Great was the sorrow,
The boys he slew,
Infants out of envy.

4. He was born of Mary
on this day
He leads us with grace
To heavenly joy.

5. Alpha and Omega (the beginning and the end) When the choir chants,
With songs and instruments (music),
Let us bless the Lord.
