We live in the times of technological progress and information… Such human qualities as altruism, humaneness, and self-forgetfulness are falling into oblivion… All these qualities are supposed to be instilled from the very childhood, education being the most essential criterion. Quite often some people neglect the role of music in our lives. It surrounds us everywhere, at all times. Not only does it have an aesthetic function, but also an educating one. Nowadays there’s a lot of various music, including music for kids, but evidently it doesn’t carry any message or idea. Still, there are works which evoke the right emotions and feelings, and create the right mood. I refer to the waltz from Vladimir Rebikov’s opera “Yolka” (The Christmas Tree). It is touching, cordial, narrative, sad and poetically affectionate… Music of this kind reveals the reverse side of joy and festivity, helps to explain the nature of empathy and compassion. Such music can be very instrumental in teaching not only how to enjoy beautiful music, but to realize what sort of idea it coveys. When you hear the melody of the waltz you can easily reproduce the images and pictures which intensify the creation of a special atmosphere. The waltz recreates the images of winter, snowstorm and snowflakes swirling in the air. The minor tonality denotes mental anguish and sadness, the repetitive melody underlies the fact that the sorrow doesn’t subside, keeps coming back along with the descending thirds resembling falling tears… And a sudden change to a major tonality brings to our minds the images of joyful children, merry dancing, Christmas tree and festive gifts, but just for a little while. Such works are really rare and called for.
