“Mary Did You Know?” has been among the most popular Christmas songs these days. The text of the song was written by the American Christian singer and songwriter Mark Alan Lowry who was asked to write a Christmas musical by the local pastor. Lowry came up with a few monologues, in one of which he addressed Virgin Mary asking her about how it is to be the mother of God. Bud Green, an American Gospel singer and songwriter, agreed to come up with the music to this interesting poem-monologue. The song was first recorded by the American singer Michael English for his 1991 self-titled debut album. Since then, “Mary Did You Know?” was recorded and covered by numerous artists, the most prominent of which include Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd duet, Cee Lo Green, American Idol star participant Clay Aiken, Pentatonix’ a capella version. Among the most recent performers of this Christmas classic are Zara Larsson, Voctave, Straight No Chaiser, The Braxtons. On this page, you can find the sheet music to both the original Lowry-Green version, as well as the interpretations by other singers.

What an interesting form. I do not recall any Christian music works that would be written as a dialogue with Virgin Mary, a curious idea, well-embedded in a music piece. I must say that none of the versions other than the original by Bud Green is more musically appealing to me. They are original and possible but not quite 'true-sounding'. However, if I were to pick one more arrangement to play, it would be the acapella shot by Pentatonix.
