“À la mode” is a French expression meaning “in style”. This piece was composed in the style of Claude Debussy, a French composer who was a part of the impressionist movement in music. He used modal and whole tone scale patterns as well as harmony with added tones, omitted tones, and parallel chords to create a dreamy, hazy effect. Major and minor scales are deliberately abandoned. This piece focuses particularly on whole tone scales and expanded chords, exploring their capacity to create an atmosphere of dazed wonder and features various inversions of thematic materials to evoke a kind of distorted familiarity.
