“Les millions d'Arlequin” (or “Harlequinade”) is a two-act ballet with music by the Italian composer Riccardo Drigo. The choreography was staged by the French ballet dancer Marius Petipa. The ballet was premiered in Saint-Petersburg in 1900 and was an official dedication to the Russian Empress Alexandra. While Petipa’s production hasn’t been performed after 1927, Drigo’s music got independently popular. The score was transcribed for piano and issued by the German publisher Musikverlag Zimmermann in 1901. The most widely-performed part of the score is the piece “Serenade” from the first act of the ballet. It is commonly known under a few titles, including “Valse Boston” and “Vebetian Serenade”. The 1922 adaptation of the piece for the “Notturno d’amour” song was recorded by multiple famed artists including the Italian opera singer Beniamino Gigli whose version became an international hit. The “Serenade” was among the music pieces performed by the heroic members of the RMS Titanic band.

Serenade Dal Balletto "I milioni di Arlecchino"
Sandra Roberts 26 Jun 2019 14:13
A beautiful piano transcription of my favourite ballet! I was lucky to watch Harlequinade twice in St. Petersburg and it remains one of my brightest association with this majestic city. Of course, Serenade is among the best-known pieces from the ballet and it sounds amazing as a vocal performance with piano accompaniment. However, I do find the piece extremely attractive even performed on its own. Glad to find such a broad variety of scores to this work in your catalogue.
