The English translation of the title is ‘From the Gulf of Cassandra’ and refers
to the place where this work was composed – in a quiet village in a garden
full of fruit and olive trees close to a beautiful beach on the Gulf of
Cassandra in Northern Greece.
The music reflects the sense of returning to a simpler way of life: the sea,
the sun, the moon, the wind, birdsong, bees humming, pine forests fragrant
with the warmth of the sun, the silky, soft sand underfoot, the taste of fresh
figs and cool, sweet grapes on sea-salty lips, the change of fierce summer
heat to gentling autumn warmth, the heady redolence of fermenting figs
and the full moon illuminating the distant poplars.
The composition is dedicated to Peter Klatzow, with deep admiration and
affection.
