Gioachino Rossini is known for his delightful Italian operas, especially the overtures, like William Tell or The Barber of Seville. Early in his life he composed a set of 6 Sonatas for String Quartet. Later, Frederik Berr, a clarinetist known by Rossini, arranged the quartets for winds (c. 1820). This setting by John Gibson uses Berr's arrangement but with a considerable amount of editing needed for the only edition currently available. In addition, two alternate parts have been added to the original flute, clarinet, horn, and bassoon instrumentation. You may also use another clarinet in place of the French horn and a bass clarinet in place of the bassoon. The music overall is not difficult, however there are sections for each instrument that require a fair amount of technique.
