This is a seven movement musical narrative describing the various stages of the development of the creation of life. It is neither a religious statement nor a scientific document. By combining different musical techniques and styles, co-existing here side by side, I have found a way to express my views of an ideal utopian world, of a society where everyone lives together in harmony and peace. I have completed my musical narrative with a poem my mother wrote sometime before 1933, in a time of deprivation and extreme hardship and to complete the symphony with a section from a psalm, the last words; ‘that mortal men may cause terror no more’ as a plea to humanity. The poem is written in German and describes the poverty and needs of simple everyday folk.

From 2nd Symphony Genesis 5th movement
Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous eras,
The age of the dinosaurs.

Genesis is a seven movement musical narrative dealing with the evolving evolution of life from the dawn of time until today. Each movement is a period in time of the evolution history, and a musical description of the beauties of nature.
This movement has three sections representing three eras that are combined together into one movement as a sort of free sonata form. The exposition represents the Triassic era and the middle section the Jurassic. The final section represents the Cretaceous era as the recapitulation of this movement as everything moves back again to a new start, due to the extinction of the dinosaurs.

There was only one continent at the beginning of the Triassic era called Pangaea. It was a harsh place. The continent was a hot and dry wilderness like a desert. There were no flowers, no grass and no ice caps at the poles, just one continent, water and Triassic prairies covered in ferns, and moss. It was the dawn of the age of the dinosaurs.
The Jurassic era saw new species of dinosaurs that were the largest animals ever to have lived on earth. Evolution continued to produce and develop even larger species and the earth was shaken with constant climate changes, earthquakes and erupting volcanoes. The continent split into two main continents called Gondwana and Laurasia.

During the Cretaceous era the continents split further and these gigantic creatures evolved into even more different kinds of dinosaurs. They had ruled the earth for millions of years before disaster struck. The evolution of life is revolving back, the continents are splitting and meteoroids are hitting earth. Extinction of species is a major issue here. This situation is imitated through the use of percussion and the descending melody representing falling stars and descending meteoroids. The movement ends with a harp solo. A new dawn is approaching and evolution can continue.

Sea life in the ocean swarms of fishes of various sizes, the first jawed fishes and sea creatures, the abundance of still primitive life forms in the water, concluding with the first life on land, this is the atmosphere of the third movement. The string section is divided into fifteen individual parts to create an atmosphere of ocean life, of swarms of fishes and sea creatures, the full wonders of ocean life and created an acoustic effect of echoes.
(Silurian era). approx, 400 million years ago. The ocean, sea life and fishes.

(Devonian era) approx. 360 million years ago
First life on land, an atmospheric sensation of creatures struggling onto land for the first time.

Psalm 10
You will listen, O Lord, To the prayers of the lowly;
You will give them courage. You will hear the cries
of the oppressed
And the orphans; You will judge in their favour
So that mortal men may cause terror no more.
Genesis is a seven movement musical narrative dealing with the evolving
evolution of life from the dawn of time until today, the destructive nature
of the human race and the political issues surrounding this negative fact
and the distant uncertain future.
Having considered an appropriate conclusion to Genesis I completed this composition
by adding the choir to the orchestra with a poem written by my mother. The choice to
use this poem was inspired by her sculptures.
I added a section from the bible, after the poem, whereby the words, 'That mortal men
may cause terror no more' making an appropriate conclusion to the poem.
Verständigt euch, Freedom, Terror no more, Courage, Glücklich sein, Peace.
I have purposely used both languages.
