Brahms' "Liebeslieder" and "Neue Liebeslieder" Waltzes are beloved by mixed choirs (and their pianists!) wherever classical music is sung. Some years ago I decided that male choirs (starting with the Vancouver Men's Chorus) and their pianists (namely me!) should have a chance to get in on the fun as well! (My enthusiasm for this project may also have had something to do with a certain duet partner I had in mind!...)
So in March 1993, at the historic Orpheum Theatre, the Vancouver Men's Chorus, accompanied by me and a certain duet partner, gave the first performance of these adaptations. As far as I know that was also their last performance; but I hope to change that unhappy fact, by making them available here in a beautifully-typeset and carefully-edited version, at a mere two dollars a pop!
I chose five contrasting selections from Brahms's two sets and reassembled them as a six-minute suite, revoiced for 2-and 3-part men's chorus (expanding to 4 parts for the final exciting waltz), and keeping the keys the same so that they could be used with Brahms's original piano-duet accompaniments. Not only that, but I gave each love-song a charming English translation for singing! (Check the last page of the preview if you want to see just how charming -- and how singable, and how true to the original German -- my translations are!)
