- very easy version
- easy version
- light version
- master version.

Scott Joplin (1867-1917) was an American composer and pianist renowned for his ragtime compositions. “Maple Leaf Rag” in particular achieved great fame and popularity, becoming one of ragtime’s most influential pieces, and has been dubbed “the archetypal rag”. The roots of ragtime originate from African-American communities in the late 19th century, identifiable by its syncopated, or ragged, rhythms.
This is a challenging recital piece, combining scalic passages, arpeggiated phrases, and syncopated rhythms.

“Maple Leaf Rag” is one of the first ragtime works by the American pianist and composer Scott Joplin who was crowned the ‘King of Ragtime’. It was among his earliest rags composed but it was the one that set the direction in this genre of music for other composers to follow (it became the basis for Joseph Lamb’s “Sensation” too, for example). It was the “Maple Leaf Rag” that provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and even after the musician’s death the piece went on to be recorded by multiple artists. In the 70ies, at the time of the ragtime music revival, the piece was on the peak again and more versions were born. Even though the era has passed, contemporary composers keep creating interesting arrangements of the “Maple Leaf Rag” and some of them can be downloaded in our catalogue. Technically, it is considered to be an intermediate piece but the left hand would need quite good coordination skills to play it right. Scott Joplin believed that after the publication, this composition would bring him great success. And it did.

I played the piece for teacher and she said it's my best performance since our first class :) Planning to take it to audition too!

Everyone who likes ragtime in general and Scott Joplin in particular will enjoy playing Maple Leaf immensely, it's one of those jazz/rag classics that stands out in the history of this music genre. The piece is great for training intervals (left hand especially) and stretching your hands in general. It might not be an easy bite for the intermediate pianists but it's a great chance to level up your skills and is not as overplayed as the renowned Entertainer. A little tip for beginners - learning the piece in the key of G is much easier.
