This movement owes much of its design to the Slavonic Dances of Dvorak.
It follows the pattern of alternating slow-quick-slow-quick dances common in the folk music of the region. There's also a strong gypsy influence on top of the basic slavonic character.

This piece is the second movement of my symphonic poem about the city and people of Prague.
I was very much taken by the city on my two visits. It is one of the jewels of continental Europe. This movement focusses on the historical rulers of Prague and what is now the Czech republic. Wenceslas, of course, has wider resonances throughout Western Europe, thanks to his personification and glorification as Santa Claus. St Vitas is famous for his supposed ability to cure poisonous spider bites through dancing and Sigismund was a great conqueror of his time.
