A keyboard piece drawn from the FITZWILLIAM VIRGINAL BOOK of 1612, by Byrd, arranged for standard string quartet. Very free imitative counterpoint pervades in what are variations on a song of the period. Even though "keys" are not yet invented, per se, the work nevertheless ranges through C+, F+, G+ and Bb+ pretty capably. The arranger has superimposed phrasing, tempos and dynamics to help make this 400 year old work perhaps a little more congenial to modern players and listeners.
