“Estate” (‘summer’ from It.) is a popular Italian song that has now become a worldwide jazz standard. It was written back in 1960 in collaboration of two Brunos: Martino (score) and Brighetti (lyrics). At the time of the song’s release, it was just an ordinary composition popular only within the borders of Italy. However, due to the Bossa Nova cover version by the Brazilian singer João Gilberto, “Estate” acquired its international recognition. The original Italian lyrics sing ‘I hate summer’ and are about bitter love memories. In the English language, there 3 versions of the lyrics: by Peggy Lee, Joel E. Siegel and Jon Hendricks. Among the most notable interpretations of “Estate” can be mentioned the version by Chet Baker, Shirley Horn, Placido Domingo and Eliane Elias.
