Instrumental arrangement of the 8 part madrigal by Pearsall, based on the play "The Maid's Tragedy".
Pearsall also used the same music (as a contrafactum) for the liturgical hymn Tu es Petrus.
The pdf file contains score and parts (I have also included B flat Clarinet 4 and 5 parts as alternatives, for clarinet choirs that don't have altos).
The sound sample is an electronic preview.

The original words of the madrigal are:

Lay a garland on her hearse
of dismal yew.
Maidens, willow branches wear,
say she died true.
Her love was false, but she was firm
Upon her buried body lie
lightly, thou gentle earth.
=======

The words of the liturgical contrafactum are:

Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram
Aedificabo Ecclesiam meam,
Et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam:
Et tibi dabo claves
Regni coelorum.
Quodcumque ligaveris super terram,
Erit ligatum et in coelis;
Et quodcumque solveris super terram
Erit solutum et in coelis.

You are Peter, and on this rock
I will build My church,
And the gates of hell will not prevail against it:
And I will give you the keys
To the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth
Will be bound also in heaven;
And whatever you release on earth
Will be released also in heaven.
