A brand new brass septet scored for 2 trumpets, 2 horns, 2 trombones and tuba.
This piece had its beginnings as a call for scores with 2221 as the arrangement. Once I worked out what that meant, I pondered for a while before I came up with a suitable opening motif. This motif forms the basis of almost the whole work. All of the parts are derived from it and each linking section has its roots in it.
The piece falls into three sections: Allegro scherzando, Lento e calmato and Tempo Primo, which is a much varied reprise of the opening (using a whole tone mode, rather than major/minor).
This is a challeging piece to play, both because of the tempo and because of the dischords. These dischords are a result of the compositional process and are points of tension around which the music revolves. Players should not shy away from them, but 'lean' into them, particularly the first two at Lento e calmato.
Unfortunately, the mp3 doesn't do a good job of the fp effects, nor the glisses at the end of some of the horn notes, but it will give you an idea of what I wrote.
This is meant to be a challenging piece. But, with a bit of effort, it shouldn't be beyond most players.
As for the title, as with my recently uploaded tro, the title is derived from a 'call for scores' for a 2221 (2tpts, 2hns, 2tbnes and a tuba). However, it also reflects my feelings about a recent train journey on Northern Rail, which is probably why it is more discordant than my usual work.
The tuba has a demanding part, going both down the bottom of the range and needing fast, clean semiquaver (16ths) playing.
If you are looking for new, interesting music for your concert of more modern music, look no further.
Parts are supplied as follows. Trumpet 1 Trumpet 2 Horn 1 (F/Eb) Horn 2 (F/Eb) Trombone 1 (Bass/Treble clefs) Trombone 2 Bass/(Treble clefs) Tuba/Eb Bass (Bass/Treble Clefs)

This re-arrangement of my brass sextet is for 3 trumpets, 2 horns, trombone and bass trombone. I re-did it at the request of a client to make it easier for his particular group to play. It actually works really well on this new configuration, although the title might have to be changed to reflect the new instrumentation!
