NOTES
South Uist Whaling Song (‘S Truagh Nach do Dh’fhuirich mi Tioram air Tir) A sailor’s song of misery and wretchedness on board his whaling ship in the South Atlantic. A more literal translation of the title would be, 'What A Pity I Never Stayed On Dry Land'.
Dearest My Own One (Cailin Mo Rùin-Sa) A man sings the praises of the sweetheart he has known since his youth, as he looks forward to returning home to marry her. Also known as 'The Maid I Adore'.
Mull Of The Cool High Bens (Muile nam Fuar-bheann Mòr) A song composed by John MacDonald (1883-1940) when he was sailing to New Zealand as a young man. In the song he reflects sadly about the island of Mull and its high mountains, wishing to return some day.
