Along with the famous “Maple Leaf Rag”, “Solace” is one of the 40 ragtime solo music pieces by the great American pianist and composer Scott Joplin who is often called “The King of Ragtime”. It was composed in 1909 in the style of a ‘Mexican serenade’, as the author himself called it. Experts rather say it can be attributed to ‘contradanza’ (or ‘danza criolla’) in style. In fact, this is a hybrid music piece that is not a typical rag Joplin would normally write. “Solace” is much slower than a traditional rag is, it’s a slow-drag that can’t be played too fast. Technically, it’s a mix of Cuban habanera, tango, African folk and Americana – all in one 4-minute music gem. Some even draw comparison between “Solace” and Bizet’s “Carmen”. Most Americans would recognize this catchy melody by the popular 1973 film “The Sting”, where a few other tunes by Joplin were also used. The piece is normally played on piano solo, with tango rhythm in the left hand and ragtime syncopation – in the right. The keys are C and F Major. “Solace” also sounds lovely on the flute, violin, cello and viola.

This is one of my favorite pieces by Scot Joplin. It's not a rag or a waltz, but stands on its own. It is both sonorous and reflective in tone.
I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did arranging it.

- very easy version
- easy version
- light version
- master version.

Quite different from Joplin's standard rags but at the same time it's the most unique and versatile to play on the piano. The trick is that when you start playing Solace, you catch the general sense of it pretty fast, but what the hardest part is to lead it to perfection. I spent some time and nerve on it myself. But the result is magically awarding!
