Vincent d’Indy (1851-1931) war glühender Verehrer der Musik Richard Wagners und suchte dessen Klangideal mit seiner einzigen Oper „Fervaal“ ein französisches Pendant an
die Seite zu stellen. Dieses „Gedicht in Musik” gilt als d’Indys Meisterwerk. Alexander Guilmant hat sich als Bearbeiter stets offen für neuere Strömungen und Tonsprachen jüngerer
Komponisten gezeigt. Guilmant bearbeitete zwei Szenen der Fervaal-Oper, die 1900 bei der Edition Durand (Paris) erschienen. Die aparte Einleitung zum ersten Akt („Introduction du
1er acte de Fervaal“) mit ihrem verträumten und atmosphärischen Charakter sowie ein festliche Entrée mit integrierten Zeremonialmusik, aus der 3. Szene des 2. Aktes.
